Pillar 4
Purpose
This is the pillar people skip because it sounds abstract. In practice it is the one that decides whether the other four survive a hard year.
Purpose does not mean a calling
It means there is something in your week that you would miss if it disappeared, and someone or something depending on you turning up. That is buildable, it is free, and it does not require you to love your job.
Five cheap routes into it
Look after something
A person, an allotment, a pet, a neighbour. Being needed is a strong reason to stay well.
Make things
Cooking, repairing, drawing, building, writing. Making beats consuming for how a week feels.
Learn something hard
A language, an instrument, a trade skill. Libraries and free courses cost nothing but hours.
Contribute
Volunteering, mentoring, running the group nobody else will run. Purpose and social in one move.
Have a next thing
A small goal with a date. Not a life mission, just something ahead of you.
